A Greater Privilege

A Greater Privilege

The term a 'ray of sunshine' is often overused, but for Issy, it is just right and captures the joy and energy she spreads wherever she goes. If you think it's an exaggeration, just have a 2min conversation with her.

This year Issy has been spreading her sunshine across Sydney as she coordinates the Jesus Club New Life Art Show and she has loved meeting the talented artists at our growing network of clubs. Read on to find out what she learnt through this experience.

1. Why do you give your time to Jesus Club?

I work as a school counsellor during the week. Part of my job is to work with students with disabilities; the parents, and the teachers to ensure they are provided with the support that they need to participate, learn, and enjoy school. That work is a real privilege, but giving my time to support Jesus Club is an even greater privilege. At Jesus Club, we are seeking to meet the greatest need that people with intellectual disability have. The same need that all people have - to know and trust the one true, full and eternal life-giving God.

2. What has been a particularly powerful moment in your volunteering at Jesus Club?

I have visited several clubs this year and they have differed from each other in size, the ages of members, noise level, and pace of activities. But at each one, I have been filled with a powerful sense of the family that God adopts us into through Jesus. I have been quickly, warmly and enthusiastically greeted and brought into each group. And people are experiencing the deep, abundant love of God in Jesus Clubs across Sydney.

3. What have you learnt about yourself, about God and/or our members during your time with us?

God has lessened my desires to measure his work using visible worldly measures. He has grown my trust in his grace, spirit and word to bring people to belong to him and use them to glorify him. He is able to do, and does do, more beautiful work than the culture of our world tells me to expect.

4. Why should others get involved at Jesus Club?

To be part of sharing the gospel with people with intellectual disability and be blessed by rich fellowship.

"How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

Romans 10:14‭-‬15"
